| Locking Season 2009 |
 |
| November and early December are sometimes called the "locking season" as colder weather brings increasingly frequent outbreaks of cold, and eventually snow. It means finishing out preparations for winter - changing the tires, covering the wood pile, raking the last leaves, remembering to bring in what you don't want the snow to cover. Share how you are getting along this "locking season"..... |

| Snowshoe in the sunshine, up over the farm, along VAST trail, into the woods, out again, into the woods again. Spectacular blood red colors in the tops of the pines from the setting sun, pink snowfields. First snowshoe of the year. What was I waiting for? 1/9/10

| Just to be sure I hired chimney sweeps to come and clear out my chimney ... so now I am doing just DANDY! And I'm wondering why we never saw that huge snowfall the national news says dumped on Burlington yesterday. 33 inches?! 1/4/10

| In Vernon,VT, we're getting quite a bit of snow and the temperature is holding at 28 degrees. I rather this than sleet. Keep the white stuff coming!! 12/13/09

| Hi--we are planning a Blue Moon snowshoe hike on New Year's Eve at Highland Lodge (Greensboro) and have just learned there is a lunar eclipse that night! Last time we tried to do a full moon ski during a lunar eclipse it got VERY dark! Do you have any idea if this eclipse will darken the night sky here in the NEK, and if so, about what time the darkening begins? Thank you! 12/12/09

While there is a partial Lunar Eclipse, it will not be visible here. A very minor shadow will edge across the lower portion of the Moon across most of Asia and Europe. Our next Lunar Eclipse comes next year on the Winter Solstice. - posted by Mark Breen

| We closed up the camp yesterday, that is,turned off the gas,and drained the lines from the well head. Grandson Bryce split some firewood for stacking on the porch for ready use should there be a winter visit. Silas gathered apples from the old trees in the meadow and 5-year-old Carly got an early taste of winter with snowballs made from the ice flakes in the defrosting refrigerator. A good day for closing things up...warm in the sun, cool in the shade. Locking season? Well, we locked the shed and the door, put the key in our pocket where it will be when we might just snowshoe in this winter... 11/22/09

| One of the benefits of going to work before 6 a.m. and getting home after 6 p.m. this time of year are the spectacular risings and settings of the sun at dawn and dusk! 11/14/09

| If you're lucky you can hear a lone woodfrog in the woods. The flickers have packed their bags and gone. Moths amazingly still stagger through the air. Its easier to find old bird nests. Evening sun is more yellow than an egg yolk. And, one morning all those fallen apples are gone. 11/11/09

| I love every moment of November because it is not as cold as February and I can still work outside and the air is so fresh and crisp! I got all my chores done but the snowtires. I'll wait til early December for that since November is a 'snow teaser' month. 11/4/09
