cackling birds in the tall, scraggly oaks.
as my hands grip the cold steel of the milk cart; its clanging does not dampen the birds' calls to each other.
suddenly, there is silence. silence like an early morning cloud passing overhead with frozen rain pellets.
the birds are spooked by this silence, I am myself. We stopped moving.
And then as if the world said Good Morning, All. The birds flew off and I carried on my way. 10/15/09

to wipe the wet weather from my face as I head toward the paddock.
Dawn, the brown jersey I milk for free rent and cheese has a cold, nose. The milk lets off steam.
I look up after watering the alpaca and calf to see my first flying V-a flock of geese, heading south.

Hi Jess, Peak foliage varies from year to year, and from place to place, so it's hard to say exactly when it will occur. However, I have found the map on this site provides a good rough estimate: http://www.foliage-vermont.com/ - posted by Chris Bouchard

Hi Kevin.
We have had a number of people report the light you speak of. Turns out it was a NASA rocket!
from CNN news:
"NASA spokesman Keith Koehler said the Black Brant XII Suborbital Sounding Rocket was launched to study the Earth's highest clouds. The light came from an artificial noctilucent cloud formed by the exhaust particles of the rocket's fourth stage about 173 miles high.
Natural noctilucent clouds, also called "polar mesospheric clouds," are
"found in the upper atmosphere as spectacular displays that are most easily seen just after sunset," according to a NASA statement published earlier in September. "The clouds are the highest clouds in Earth's atmosphere, located in the mesosphere around 50 miles altitude."

The light is fading; the air is heavy with yellows and the anticipation of reds. A few gray billowing clouds slide overhead -- heavy and slow. Parents are on the sidelines gripping sweaters close and a few are wrapped in blankets. Around the camp here in southern Vermont last week, plenty of trees had this branch here, that branch there, dipped in red already. Tomorrow I head up north to Shelburne for a few days and surely the promise of fall awaits me there. But fall also brings the unexpected gift of many, many warm sunshine days, and it always has. 9/12/09
