Signs of Spring 2010
What signals spring to you? Snow fleas, robins, sugaring, mud.......sandals, lawn mowers, and many others. Please share your observations of the emergence of Spring, now through the month of April.

We know it's spring in Essex Jct when the Harley dealership is buzzing and the obnoxious bikes are all over the streets of Essex. Forget the F-35 jets; people should be protesting the noise pollution from the inconsiderate Harley owners. 4/9/10 1:01 AM

At 2000 feet in Barnard - Heard very loud chorus of peepers when it hit 80 degrees yesterday and Hermit Thrushes songs this morning - weeks early!

Our one SURE sign of spring down here in the Otter Creek valley is the annual flooding! It came on early this year... but it's absolutely gorgeous. As I was basking on a south facing porch last weekend I was treated to a lone robin exploring the ground around my compost bins. Looking in the other direction I noticed about 2" of lily greens poking skyward among old foliage. I've purchased new seed packets lately, seen some bare legs outside, and least exciting of all has been the increase of cluster flies bouncing against sunny windows! Yesterday was so beautiful that I went to my vegetable garden and shoveled 8 inches of snow off the row of parsnips wintering in the frozen ground. Our cat, who remains a self-imposed housecat during the winter, deigned to venture outdoors for the first time since snow hit the ground in Essex. Coupled with roadkill--a skunk in Essex and a groudhog in Richmond--pretty clearly show me that spring is nigh. 3/6/10 2:43 PM
